Reflection:
Since starting the ITEC program at KSU I have attended several professional development sessions to improve my understanding and knowledge of technology in the field. One of the most prominent continuous learning experiences would be my completion of the district initiative called Microsoft Innovative Educator Classroom (MIE-C). I am already a Microsoft Innovative Educator-Expert (MIE-E), which is required before applying for the MIE-C. In this initiative, I focused on integrating Microsoft tools that my students all have access to into the classroom more. The process included the creation and implementation of six lesson plans during a school year that demonstrates 21st Century Learning Dimensions (21stCLD) and the diverse use of Microsoft tools in the classroom. This professional development also included observations from administration and MIEE district employees.
Standard 6.1, Continuous Learning provided me the opportunity to demonstrate continual growth in knowledge and skills of current and emerging technologies and apply them to improve personal productivity and professional practice. The MIE-C experience allowed my students to utilize the tools that they have on their dashboard. Our district is a Microsoft district where all of our students have accounts, email addresses, and software from Microsoft. By participating in the MIE-C certification, I incorporated these Microsoft tools into my classroom more through the continual growth in knowledge and skills. I used several Microsoft tools in conjunction with others to create innovative lesson plans to help my students engage in the lessons. These current and emerging technologies helped teach students how to become more technologically savvy. I am able to apply the current and emerging technologies to improve personal productivity and professional practice by using them in my classroom. I took students on virtual field trips using Skype in the classroom, I had student collaborating and creating presentations, using forms to collect data, etc. Both my students and I have been able to utilize these tools to meet 21stCLDs.
Completing the MIE-C was a rewarding experience to see the growth and development of my technical skills and how I was able to influence my students by incorporating current and emerging technologies into my classroom. I learned how to utilize the Microsoft tools that the student has access to in a way that engages students. I also learned how to successfully structure a virtual field trip that was a meaningful experience for the students. To further improve this continuous learning, I would like to broaden my horizon by learning other tools such as Google in the Classroom. I believe that this would make me a more well-rounded educator and I could even be more impacted by the new technologies and opportunities.
This artifact impacts student learning. Through continuous learning, I am able to bring more into my classroom and engage my students in new and innovative ways. This gives them different perspectives as to how to solve a problem, create a presentation, and reach new goals. The students benefit most from continuous learning because as an educator, I can bring new strategies and technologies to enrich their learning experiences. The impact can be seen in their presentations and work completed in the different lessons.
