The SWOT Analysis was completed to determine the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats Creekview High School has. This analysis was broken into eight essential conditions that were examined and I created recommendations for the gap analysis. I completed this assignment independently, however, I did consult with our principal and technology specialist to gather some of the information for the report. I also created and distributed a Technology Assessment Survey that faculty members and administration completed collecting data on the teachers regarding how they feel about the current technology at our school. Through this survey, I was able to gain a true understanding of where the teachers are so that we can address it in the SWOT analysis.
Standard 4.1, Digital Equity provided me the opportunity to model and promote strategies for achieving equitable access to digital tools and resources and technology-related best practices for all students and teachers. By creating the SWOT Analysis, I was able to analyze the school through the eight essential conditions. I modeled and promoted strategies for achieving equitable access by collecting all of the data through the surveys, the ISTE Diagnostics tools, the district’s three-year technology plan. and consultation with the principal and technology specialist. Once I compiled the analysis, I presented the findings to our administration to show them how we can achieve equitable access to digital tools and resources as well as technology-related best practices that we can implement. Through the different sections of the analysis, I recommended increasing our use of technology in the class, providing more opportunities for teachers to have training based on their needs and to help with specific research-based instructional strategies in our school. A gap was observed between how to appropriately implement technology into the classroom amongst teachers. Some teachers believed that having students use it for research and document composition was the best practices, however, through research-based instructional strategies, it is not the case. Students and teachers need to be implementing technology at a high LoTi level. According to LoTi, it is the “balance between instruction, assessment, and the effective use of digital resources to promote higher order thinking, engaged student learning, and authentic assessment practices in the classroom” (2017). By suggesting using technology-related best practices, our administrators were able to see the impact that this could have on our students and teachers as well as ways that they could provide this support to our teachers.
Completing the SWOT analysis allowed me to create an in-depth analysis of our school’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats and present these finding to our administration. I learned how to collect information and create a survey to gain information for the SWOT analysis. This provided me the opportunity to analyze what strengths, weakness, opportunities, and threats Creekview have in terms of equitable access to digital tools and resources and technology-related best practices for all students and teachers. After I addressed these, I was able to then provide recommendations based on research to help improve these essential conditions to make our school better. To further improve the SWOT analysis, I would like to also survey the students. I believe that this would give me a more complete snapshot of the school.
This artifact impacts school improvement and faculty development. At the time of the SWOT analysis, our school did not have the learning management system (LMS), Canvas, so our use of technology was very limited. Considering I was able to create the SWOT Analysis, I believe that this provided the school the opportunity examine where we were at in comparison to the district’s three-year technology plan. The SWOT Analysis impacted our goals for the upcoming school year and we were able to provide more technical support for teachers, so they can implement it in the classroom. The following school year, teachers began using Canvas and this helped encourage teachers to implement technology into the classroom. Our school has since incorporated more technology into the school improvement plan, established a Technology Committee, and our teachers are using research-based practices in their lessons.
