The Copyright Assignment allowed me to create a presentation about the use of videos in the classroom and determining whether or not they fall into copyright laws. This presentation addresses the definition of copyright and fair use for viewers to understand the difference. I then wanted to answer some common questions about copyright before looking at scenarios that a teacher may face. For my presentation, I also wanted to show ways that teachers and students could appropriately incorporate videos into their class lessons or project. This is important for teachers to abide by what they are asking their students do. According to Stim, there are four factors to be considered to ensure the video used fall under the “fair use” rule (Stim, 2016). I utilized these four factors, to base my scenarios on to show teachers and students how to use video in the classroom without violating copyright laws. I created the presentation in a question-answer format to engage the viewers more and to make them respond with their own answer before learning the correct answer. With the correct answers, I explained examples on how to appropriately use the video addressed in the example.
Standard 4.2, Safe, Healthy, and Ethical Use provided me an opportunity to model and facilitate the safe, healthy, and ethical use of digital information and technologies. Through the Copyright Assignment, I addressed the safe, healthy, and ethical use of digital information and technologies by addressing the use of videos in the classroom. In the 21st century, students are more interested in watching video clips from actual events, movie scenes about the time, and/or educational videos on the topic such as documentaries. I created the presentation to model and facilitate this use by structuring the presentation to give the viewers the background information on copyright laws and fair use than going into the most common questions about copyright laws. I then addressed the proper way to use videos in the classroom from both the teacher and student perspective. I am able to model and facilitate the safe, healthy, and ethical use of digital information and technologies by giving scenarios in which teachers and students may use videos in the classroom and ask them whether or not that this falls under copyright or fair use and if this video can be used or not. This will provide the viewers to make their own judgment before learning the correct one.
Completing the Copyright Assignment allowed me to create a presentation that teachers and students can reference so they are abiding by the copyright laws and fair use. I learned the appropriate ways to incorporate video into my classroom and be able to make a presentation that allows others to be able to do the same. To further improve this project, I would like to expand the topic to address pictures as well because this is something that teachers and students use frequently. I would also add information on how they can use features in Office 365 and Google to find pictures, music, and video under creative commons. I believe that this would better help teachers and students abide by copyright laws.
This artifact impacts faculty development. The Copyright Assignment provided the opportunity to clarify some of the copyright infringement issues that some of our teachers have committed because they were unsure of how to use the material ethically in their classroom. The teachers now can use this information for themselves and teach their students to have everyone using safe, healthy, and ethical use of digital information and technologies. This can be seen in teacher created presentations and student presentations that include images and videos.
